A puppy’s ears are not only adorable but also play an important role in hearing and balance. Because their ear canals are relatively long and curved, they can easily trap dirt and moisture. That’s why ear care is an essential part of your dog’s daily health routine.
Prevent Infections: Moist or dirty ears can breed bacteria and fungi.
Control Ear Mites: Mites cause itching, discharge, and sometimes swelling.
Protect Hearing: Chronic ear problems may lead to hearing loss.
Improve Comfort: Clean ears make your pup feel happier and more relaxed.
Check your puppy’s ears once a week. Look for:
Clean, healthy pink ear canals.
Any unusual odor, brown or black discharge.
Signs of scratching, pawing, or frequent head shaking.
Prepare Supplies: Pet ear-cleaning solution, cotton balls, or gauze (avoid cotton swabs to prevent injury).
Hold Your Puppy Gently: Comfort and calm them first.
Apply Ear Cleaner: Place a few drops into the ear canal, then gently massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds.
Let Your Puppy Shake: This helps remove excess liquid and debris.
Wipe the Outer Ear: Use a cotton ball or gauze to gently clean the ear flap and folds.
Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as they may irritate the ear.
If you notice redness, swelling, a foul odor, or excessive discharge, visit a veterinarian immediately.
Dogs with long ears (such as Cocker Spaniels or Basset Hounds) or those who swim often need more frequent ear care.
Keep ears dry after swimming or bathing.
Trim hair around the ear canal to reduce buildup.
Start ear-cleaning habits early so your puppy gets used to the routine.
